The Université libre de Bruxelles, the main university in the Brussels-Capital Region and in the French-speaking Community, welcomes, in addition to its staff, nearly 40,000 students who live in the city and bring it to life.

Artists’ studios fascinate and form part of the heritage and representations of European cities: in the case of Paris, the capital of the arts in the 19th century, numerous publications describe life in the studios and situate their development in the historical and spatial context of the French capital. In Brussels, the ‘Little Paris’ of the turn of the 20th century, the architectural heritage associated with the sites of artistic creation is also rich but much less well known. Yet the golden age of Brussels’ studios coincided with that of Art Nouveau and, more generally, with the capital’s economic expansion and spatial expansion.
